Concept

acoustic reflector

A specialised structure in the back wall of certain pitcher plants, such as Nepenthes hemsleyana, that is shaped to reflect the echolocation calls of bats. This morphological adaptation allows Hardwicke's woolly bats to easily distinguish these pitchers from surrounding foliage in the dense jungle, facilitating their use as roosting sites and ensuring the plant receives nutrient-rich deposits.
