Person

Basil Brown

A self-taught English archaeologist and astronomer who discovered the Sutton Hoo ship burial in 1939. Working for the landowner Edith Pretty, Brown’s meticulous excavation techniques preserved the delicate impression of the ship’s hull in the sandy soil. Despite his lack of formal training, his early work was critical in identifying the site's significance before national experts from the British Museum took over the excavation.
