helicoidal (Bouligand) architecture

A helicoidal structure with thin, layered fibers arranged in a slow spiral, creating a complex, textured pattern against a dark background.

A material design in which thin layers of aligned fibres are stacked with each layer rotated by a small angle from the one below, producing a slow spiral through the thickness. Named for the French biologist Yves Bouligand, who described it in crustacean cuticle in 1965. A crack travelling through the stack must continuously change direction, dissipating energy and resisting catastrophic failure.
