Buys Ballot

Christoph Hendrik Diederik Buys Ballot was a 19th-century Dutch chemist and meteorologist best known for his eponymous law of wind direction. In 1845, he conducted the first empirical test of the Doppler effect using trumpeters on a moving train. His work helped establish the physical reality of frequency shifts in acoustics, laying the groundwork for the verification of similar effects in light.
