Concept

carbocation

A carbocation is a molecule containing a carbon atom with a positive electrical charge and three or five bonds. Historically considered too unstable to exist for more than a fraction of a second, these ions were first directly observed and stabilised by George Olah using superacidic solvents. They are critical intermediates in many organic chemical reactions, including those used to produce fuels and plastics.
