The first CRISPR-based medicine ever approved by a national regulator, cleared in the United Kingdom in November 2023 and in the United States a month later. Developed by Vertex Pharmaceuticals and CRISPR Therapeutics, it treats sickle-cell disease and beta-thalassemia by editing a patient's own bone-marrow stem cells to reactivate fetal haemoglobin. The list price is around two million dollars per patient.
