Centre Spatial Guyanais

A rocket stands poised at the Centre Spatial Guyanais, surrounded by misty clouds, with the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean visible in the distance.

Europe's spaceport, on the Atlantic coast of French Guiana near the town of Kourou. Operational since 1968, it sits about five degrees north of the equator, which gives launches a free boost from the Earth's rotation. Ariane, Vega, and for a time Soyuz vehicles fly from here. The site is run jointly by CNES, ESA, and Arianespace.
