Person

Charles Babbage

Charles Babbage, an English mathematician from 1791 to 1871, is depicted in formal attire with a gold mechanical device beside him, symbolizing his contributions to early computing.

English mathematician (1791–1871) who designed the Difference Engine, a mechanical calculator for tabulating polynomial functions, and later the more ambitious Analytical Engine, a programmable computer in everything but name. Babbage's designs required precision well beyond what was commercially available; the Difference Engine was only ever partially built, in Joseph Clement's shop, with parts whose tolerances traced back to Maudslay's bench.
