Concept

contour line

A cartographic tool used to represent three-dimensional topography on a two-dimensional map by connecting points of equal elevation. First employed by Charles Hutton to process the complex surveying data from the Schiehallion experiment, contour lines allow for the immediate visual interpretation of slope and terrain. They remain the standard method for depicting relief in both professional surveying and recreational navigation.
