Materials scientist at the University of California, Irvine, previously at UC Riverside, who led the team that worked out the layered architecture of the mantis shrimp's dactyl club beginning in 2012. His group has since extended the work to fish scales, mollusc shells, and engineered composites that copy the helicoidal fibre arrangement for aerospace and protective applications.
