de Havilland Comet

The world's first commercial jetliner, the Comet debuted in 1952. Developed by the British de Havilland company, it featured four engines buried in the wing roots and a pressurised cabin. Despite its technological lead, a series of catastrophic mid-air breakups due to metal fatigue led to its grounding and eventual commercial eclipse by American rivals.
