Concept

Pol III

A black, three-dimensional model of a DNA double helix is shown against a light background, symbolizing the concept of Pol III, the bacterial DNA polymerase III enzyme.

DNA polymerase III, the principal replicative enzyme of bacteria. A multi-subunit holoenzyme that achieves processivity through a sliding β-clamp encircling the DNA. In E. coli it extends new strands at about a thousand bases per second with an intrinsic proofreading subunit. Distinct from Pol I, which Kornberg first isolated and which handles mostly repair and Okazaki fragment maturation.
