Person

Edith Pretty

An English landowner who initiated the excavation of the burial mounds on her estate at Sutton Hoo. Driven by curiosity and reports of ghostly sightings, she hired Basil Brown to investigate. Following the discovery of the spectacular treasure, she famously donated the entire find to the British Museum, a gesture described as one of the most generous gifts ever made to the nation by a living donor.
