Concept

GABA-A receptor

A major protein in the central nervous system that responds to the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid. It acts as an inhibitory gateway, allowing chloride ions to enter neurons and reducing their likelihood of firing. Most general anaesthetics, including propofol and barbiturates, are thought to work by binding to this receptor and amplifying its quietening effect on the brain.
