G.D. Searle & Company

G.D. Searle & Company was a pharmaceutical firm based in Skokie, Illinois, founded in 1888. Known for developing the first birth control pill and various cardiovascular drugs, it became the epicentre of the aspartame discovery in 1965. The company’s long struggle for regulatory approval of the sweetener became a landmark case in FDA history before the firm was acquired by Monsanto.
