George Westinghouse

American industrialist (1846–1914) who made his first fortune at twenty-two by inventing the railway air brake. Bought Tesla's AC patents in 1888 and built the Westinghouse Electric Company into Edison's principal rival. Won the contract to light the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and to harness Niagara Falls. Lost control of his company in the financial panic of 1907; died seven years later.
