British physicist (1917–1983) who, working with John Randall at Birmingham in early 1940, co-invented the cavity magnetron by drilling resonant holes into a solid copper block. The pair tested their first device in February 1940; it produced 400 watts of microwave power immediately, far above expectations. Boot spent the rest of his career on plasma physics at the Royal Naval Scientific Service.
