Huu-ay-aht

A First Nations people based on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Their oral histories contain detailed accounts of a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that devastated their ancestral lands in the late 17th century. These traditions, which describe the waves striking on a winter night, provided critical independent corroboration for the geological dating of the 1700 Cascadia event.
