Isoprene

A volatile liquid hydrocarbon that serves as the basic chemical building block of natural rubber. Formally known as 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene, these units link together in long, coiled chains to form polyisoprene. While the tree synthesizes it with perfect regularity, the resulting material requires chemical stabilization to be useful for industrial applications.
