Ivan Yarkovsky

Ivan Osipovich Yarkovsky was a Polish-Russian civil engineer who worked for the Russian railways during the late nineteenth century. An amateur scientist, he proposed in 1901 that the thermal radiation of a rotating body in space could produce a small but significant force. His work remained obscure until it was rediscovered in the mid-twentieth century, eventually becoming a foundational concept in planetary science.
