James M. Schlatter

James M. Schlatter (1942–present) was an American organic chemist at G.D. Searle & Company. In 1965, while synthesising a tetrapeptide for anti-ulcer research, he accidentally discovered the intense sweetness of aspartame by licking a contaminated finger. His serendipitous discovery led to the development of one of the most widely used artificial sweeteners in history.
