Jean-François Champollion

A brilliant French philologist and linguist, celebrated for his decipherment of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. Through his profound knowledge of Coptic and meticulous comparison of the Rosetta Stone's scripts, he established that hieroglyphs were a complex system of phonetic and ideographic signs. His 1822 breakthrough founded the modern discipline of Egyptology.
