Northern Irish physicist (1928-1990) who spent most of his career at CERN, working on accelerator design by day and the foundations of quantum mechanics by night. His 1964 inequality reframed the EPR debate as an experimental question for the first time. He died of a stroke shortly before the work would have made him a clear candidate for a Nobel Prize.
