Person

Joseph Capgras

A French psychiatrist who practised at the Maison Blanche hospital in Paris during the early twentieth century. In 1923, he co-authored the definitive clinical description of 'l'illusion des sosies', the belief that loved ones have been replaced by identical doubles. His work laid the foundation for the study of delusional misidentification syndromes, which were later understood to have neurological rather than purely psychiatric origins.
