Person

Joseph Clement

A man with light brown hair and a beard, dressed in a dark blue coat over a white shirt with a bow tie, stands against a dark background.

Westmorland-born draughtsman and toolmaker (1779–1844), promoted to chief draughtsman in Maudslay's office before opening his own workshop in 1817. From 1823 to 1832 he was the principal contractor building Charles Babbage's Difference Engine, fabricating thousands of identical brass parts to tolerances no other workshop in Britain could meet. The collaboration collapsed in a dispute over money before the engine was finished.
