Neurobiologist at the University of Queensland's Queensland Brain Institute, known for decades of work on visual systems in reef animals. His 2014 paper with Hanne Thoen and colleagues used behavioural training to show that mantis shrimp discriminate colours less finely than vertebrates, despite having far more photoreceptor classes, and proposed that the eye performs fast pattern recognition rather than spectral analysis.
