ketamine

A dissociative anaesthetic first synthesised in 1962 that induces a trance-like state while providing potent pain relief and sedation. Unlike most anaesthetics, it does not suppress the respiratory or circulatory systems significantly. It works primarily by blocking NMDA receptors in the brain, creating a "disconnection" between the conscious mind and sensory input from the body.
