Magnetite

A mineral and one of the main iron ores, with the chemical formula Fe3O4. It is ferrimagnetic, meaning it is attracted to magnets and can be magnetized itself. In ferrofluids, it is used in the form of nanoparticles—roughly 10 nanometres in diameter—to provide the magnetic response while remaining small enough to stay in permanent liquid suspension.
