Manado

Manado is a coastal city on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, known for its proximity to the rich marine biodiversity of the Celebes Sea. In 1997, it became the site of a major scientific breakthrough when a second species of coelacanth was discovered in a local fish market. The surrounding waters, characterised by deep volcanic drops and complex current systems, provide a habitat for the Indonesian coelacanth, a population that has remained geographically isolated for millions of years.
