Spanish molecular biologist at the University of Oviedo whose 2022 PNAS paper, written with Carlos López-Otín and colleagues, sequenced and compared the genomes of Turritopsis dohrnii and its non-immortal cousin Turritopsis rubra. The work identified expanded gene families for DNA repair, telomere maintenance, and pluripotency that together appear to underwrite the species' ability to reverse ageing.
