Mark Erdmann

Mark Erdmann is an American marine biologist who discovered the second living species of coelacanth in 1997. While visiting a fish market in Sulawesi, Indonesia, he recognised a specimen that closely resembled the African coelacanth but was genetically distinct. His discovery of Latimeria menadoensis expanded the known range of the genus by thousands of kilometres and challenged previous assumptions about the isolation and distribution of these ancient fish populations across the Indo-Pacific.
