Person

McArthur Wheeler

A man wearing glasses, a light blue shirt, a dark tie, and a brown striped jacket stands against a neutral background.

American bank robber whose 1995 spree in Pittsburgh became the founding anecdote of an entire research programme. Wheeler covered his face in lemon juice in the belief that it would render him invisible to security cameras, and was caught within hours of the footage being broadcast. He served time and gave the field its motif for confident incompetence.
