Concept

methyl salicylate

An organic ester naturally produced by many species of plants, particularly wintergreens. It is used as a flavoring agent and in liniments for muscle pain. In the context of triboluminescence, it acts as a phosphor, absorbing ultraviolet light produced by the excitation of nitrogen during the crushing of sugar and re-emitting it as a visible blue glow.
