Concept

NMDA receptors

A glutamate-gated ion channel in the brain that plays a critical role in synaptic plasticity and memory function. It is a primary excitatory receptor, meaning it helps neurons fire and transmit information. Certain anaesthetics, most notably ketamine and nitrous oxide, achieve their effect by inhibiting these receptors, thereby disrupting the normal flow of neural signals required for consciousness.
