A railway track leads into a dimly lit tunnel with glowing orange lights lining its walls, set against a backdrop of rocky cliffs and a distant forested hillside.

A deep geological repository under construction at Olkiluoto on Finland's west coast, intended for the permanent disposal of spent nuclear fuel. Tunnels descend roughly 430 metres into 1.9-billion-year-old crystalline bedrock. Spent fuel will be sealed in copper canisters cushioned by bentonite clay. It is the only such facility in the world approaching operation, scheduled to begin accepting waste in the late 2020s and to be backfilled and sealed around 2120.
