Concept

Ophiocordyceps

A genus of ascomycete fungi that includes several hundred species of entomopathogenic parasites. These fungi are specialised to infect specific arthropod hosts, most notably ants, where they manipulate the host's behaviour to facilitate spore dispersal. The genus was formally separated from Cordyceps in 2007 based on molecular phylogenetic evidence.
