optic nerve

A blue eye with a central optic nerve depicted as a branching network of golden lines radiating outward, symbolizing the transmission of visual information from the retina to the brain.

The optic nerve is a critical bundle of over one million nerve fibres that transmits high-speed visual information from the retina directly to the brain. Because this bundle must physically penetrate the retinal wall to exit the eye, it creates a natural, unavoidable blind spot in vertebrate vision.
