Orphan tsunami

A tsunami that arrives at a coastline without being preceded by a local earthquake. The 1700 tsunami in Japan was an orphan wave, as the seismic event that triggered it occurred thousands of kilometres away in North America. Meticulous records kept by Japanese villagers allowed modern scientists to date the parent Cascadia earthquake to the exact hour, three centuries after it occurred.
