Pacific rosewood

Known locally as makoi, Thespesia populnea is a small tree with dark, durable wood that was considered sacred throughout Polynesia. On Easter Island, it was the preferred material for carving Rongorongo tablets and ceremonial objects. Botanical analysis has shown that several surviving tablets are made from this wood, which had largely disappeared from the island by the 18th century.
