Pareto principle

The Pareto principle, or the 80/20 rule, states that for many outcomes, roughly eighty per cent of consequences come from twenty per cent of causes. Originally observed by economist Vilfredo Pareto in the distribution of land in Italy, the concept is a specific instance of a power law and is widely applied to wealth distribution, business management, and software engineering.
