Percy Spencer

American self-taught engineer (1894–1970) who left school at twelve and went on to lead radar production at Raytheon during the Second World War. His patent on microwave cooking, filed in 1945, grew out of a melted chocolate bar in his pocket near a working magnetron. He died with around 150 patents to his name and no high school diploma.
