Pierre-François Bouchard

A French army lieutenant who, in 1799, discovered the Rosetta Stone during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign. While overseeing demolitions for fortifications near Rashid (Rosetta), he recognised the significance of the multi-scripted slab. His astute observation led to the preservation of the artefact that would become indispensable for understanding ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.
