Concept

piezoelectricity

The appearance of an electric potential across the sides of certain solid materials when they are subjected to mechanical stress. Discovered in 1880 by Pierre and Jacques Curie, the effect is fundamental to many modern technologies, including quartz watches and ultrasound transducers. In triboluminescence, piezoelectric discharge is often the primary driver of the observed light emission.
