RuBisCO

A model of RuBisCO, the enzyme responsible for carbon fixation in photosynthesis, is depicted with its characteristic branching structure and orange-colored active sites.

Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase is the enzyme responsible for the first major step of carbon fixation. Despite being the most abundant protein on Earth, it is notoriously slow and prone to confusing oxygen with carbon dioxide, leading to metabolic waste.
