rugose corals

An extinct order of corals, also known as horn corals, that flourished from the Ordovician to the Permian periods. These organisms deposited daily growth lines in their calcium carbonate skeletons. By counting these lines within annual growth cycles, researchers can determine the number of days in a year in deep time, confirming that Earth's rotation was faster in the past.
