Said Pasha

Ottoman viceroy of Egypt from 1854 to 1863 who granted Ferdinand de Lesseps the concession to build the Suez Canal. A Francophile and former classmate of de Lesseps, he provided land, labour, and funding. His successor, Isma'il Pasha, abolished the corvée and oversaw the canal's completion.
