Concept

sweet taste receptor

The sweet taste receptor is a G protein-coupled receptor located on the surface of taste bud cells. It is a heterodimer composed of two subunits, TAS1R2 and TAS1R3. The receptor functions by binding specific molecular geometries, such as those found in sugars and certain peptides like aspartame, and translating that binding into a neural signal perceived as sweetness.
