Tizard Mission

Two men in uniform stand before a large black metal trunk in a dimly lit room with crossed beams overhead, symbolizing the secretive nature of the Tizard Mission.

A British technical delegation that travelled to the United States in September 1940, carrying a black metal trunk of classified hardware — including a working cavity magnetron — in exchange for American manufacturing capacity. It is often described as the most valuable cargo ever to cross the Atlantic. The mission produced the joint radar effort that ran out of MIT's Radiation Laboratory for the rest of the war.
