Transformer

A transformer concept illustration featuring two stacked orange and black coil structures connected by wires, with a central metallic component in the middle, symbolizing the core of the device.

A device that uses electromagnetic induction between two coils to step a voltage up or down. Works only with alternating current, because the magnetic flux through the coils must vary to induce a voltage in the secondary winding. The transformer is the reason AC won: it lets you transmit power at high voltage and low current, dropping resistive losses, then step it back down for safe use at the wall socket.
