Triboluminescence

The emission of light resulting from mechanical action, such as crushing, scratching, or rubbing a solid material. It is a form of mechanoluminescence usually caused by the separation and rapid recombination of electrical charges across a fracture. While commonly observed in sugar and quartz, its potential for generating high-energy radiation like X-rays has made it a subject of modern materials science research.
